The global financial crisis that has swept over many different levels of industry across the globe has led to the loss of millions of jobs. This talk will look at the impacts of the financial crisis and the effectiveness of the nascent labor contract law. The rundown of the talk will be as follows: a briefing about the new labor contract law and its controversy areas; the impact of the financial crisis to China’s export oriented industry and their worker demand changes; and a brief discussion of a recent survey study’s results about the financial crisis and labor conditions in the apparel industry for workers in four cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Dongguang, Ningbo. At the end the talk, I will share some perspective on the psychological and social impacts of migrant workers due to the reduction in labor demand and the recent “shortage of migrant worker supply.”
